Lower quality means a smaller file and more visible compression. 92% is a good default; below about 70% the difference starts to show on photographs.

Nothing is uploaded. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. There is no server to send it to, no copy kept anywhere, and it keeps working if you lose your connection after the page has loaded.

What changes when you convert BMP to WebP

  • The image is decoded and compressed again as WebP at the quality you choose. A small loss of detail is part of lossy compression; at the default 92% it is very hard to see.
  • BMP images have no transparency, so there is nothing to lose there.
  • Camera details and GPS location (EXIF) are not copied into the new file. Photo orientation is applied to the pixels first, so the result is the right way up.

About BMP and WebP files

BMP is the old Windows bitmap format. It stores every pixel uncompressed, so files are very large, but almost any program — including very old ones — can read it.

WebP is Google’s web image format. At the same visual quality it is usually smaller than JPEG and PNG, and it supports transparency, but older desktop software may not open it. It is a good choice for images for websites, where smaller files load faster.

Limits

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch and images up to 50 megapixels — beyond that browsers run out of memory, so the tool says so instead of producing a broken file. Writing WebP needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox; older Safari versions cannot, and the tool tells you rather than saving a PNG under a .webp name. Files that are not images, or are damaged, are rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline.

Is BMP to WebP lossless?

No — WebP output is re-compressed, so a little detail is lost. Choose a higher quality to keep more of it.

Will a WebP file open everywhere?

Every current browser shows WebP, and recent versions of Windows, macOS, Photoshop and most phones open it. Some older programs and upload forms still refuse it — keep the original in that case.

What happens to transparency?

BMP has no transparency, so the result is fully opaque.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch, and images up to 50 megapixels. Convert them together and download each one, or take them all as a ZIP.
