Disclaimer

The general limits that apply across the site. Each calculator also carries its own, more specific disclaimer.

Read the disclaimer on the calculator you are using. This page covers the site as a whole. The one on each calculator page describes what that specific tool can and cannot tell you, which is usually the part that matters.

Results are informational

Everything on this site is provided for general information. No result is professional advice, and none should be treated as a substitute for a qualified professional or for the official position of a university, examination board, employer, financial institution or game publisher.

Three different kinds of calculator

The tools here are not all the same kind of thing, and treating them as though they were is the most common way to be misled by one.

Exact calculations

Some calculators perform arithmetic with a single correct answer — the number of days between two dates, a total from a list of amounts, a weighted average from credits and grade points. Given the same inputs these produce the same result every time, and that result is checkable. The limitation is the input, not the method: a wrong date in gives a wrong answer out.

Estimates based on stated assumptions

Others produce an estimate that depends on assumptions the page sets out — a rate, a scheme, a percentage, an average. Income estimates, score estimates and rating projections work this way. The arithmetic is exact, but the assumptions are approximations of a real world that varies. Change an assumption and the answer changes with it, which is why each of these calculators lets you see and adjust the values it used.

Entertainment

A few are for fun. Compatibility and friendship scores fall here. They are consistent, in that the same names produce the same result, but that consistency is a property of the arithmetic, not evidence about any real relationship. They should not inform a decision about anyone.

Rules that change

Several calculators depend on external rules: university grading regulations, examination marking schemes, game rating formulas. These change, and they differ between programmes, campuses, years and versions.

Where a calculator uses such a rule, the page states which rule set it applies. That is there so you can verify it against your own official documentation. We cannot guarantee a rule set is current or that it is the one that applies to you — please check.

No professional advice

Nothing here is financial or investment advice. Nothing here is medical advice. Nothing here is legal advice. Nothing here guarantees an academic outcome, an examination rank, an admission, a job or a level of income.

Not affiliated

Universities, examinations, games and companies named on this site are referred to only to describe what a calculator is for. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any of them, and their names and trade marks remain their own.

Errors

Calculators are tested, but errors are possible. If you find one, report it with the exact inputs you used and we will investigate. Use of the site is at your own risk, as set out in the terms of use.

Calculator-specific disclaimers

Each calculator carries its own disclaimer near the bottom of its page:
