Statistical life expectancy estimate — not a prediction

Death Date Calculator (Life Expectancy)

Enter your birth date, sex and country. The calculator uses United Nations life tables (2023 death rates) to estimate how many more years people of your age and sex live on average, with an optional small adjustment for smoking, activity and weight. It is a population-based estimate, not a prediction.

Data: UN World Population Prospects 2024, death rates for 2023. Optional — habits move the estimate a little, using population-level study averages:

Quick answer

A death date calculator cannot know when you will die. It shows an average. For example, a 36-year-old man in the United States lives about 42 more years on average (to around age 79), and a 36-year-old woman in India lives about 40 more years (to around age 77), based on UN data for 2023.

What does a death date calculator really show?

It shows an average, not a forecast. Nobody — no app, no doctor, no astrologer — can tell you the day you will die. What we can do is look at how long people of your age, sex and country live today, and turn that average into a date on the calendar.

Seeing a real date can feel strange at first. Many people find it useful: it turns “some day” into a number of weekends, summers and birthdays, and that makes it easier to plan the things that matter.

How we estimate your death date

  1. We work out your exact age from your birth date, down to the day.
  2. We look up your country’s life table. We use death rates for 2023 from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024, separately for men and women, for every age from 0 to 100+.
  3. We find your remaining life expectancy — the average number of extra years people of your exact age live.
  4. We adjust a little for habits you choose to share: smoking, exercise and body weight.
  5. We add that time to today to get an estimated date, and we also show the range most people fall into.

Everything is worked out in your browser. We do not see or store your birth date or answers.

Average years left by age: USA, India and UK

This table comes from the same UN data the calculator uses (2023). It shows how many more years, on average, a person of each age lives.

Read it like this: a 40-year-old woman in India lives about 37 more years on average, to around 77. A 40-year-old man in the US lives about 39 more years, to around 79.

Notice that the older you are, the higher your expected age at death. A newborn boy in the US is expected to reach about 77, but a 70-year-old man is expected to reach about 85. He has already made it past the years in which some people die young.

What are the chances of living to 80?

Using the 2023 death rates, about 53% of boys and 67% of girls born in the United States would live to 80. In India, about 34% of boys and 42% of girls would. Once you have reached 60, the chance of seeing 90 is about 25% for US men, 36% for US women, 12% for Indian men and 15% for Indian women.

Your own chances appear in the calculator after you enter your details. They are based on your current age, so they update as you get older.

How much do habits change the estimate?

The national average already mixes smokers and non-smokers, active and inactive people. So we move your estimate by a modest amount, based on large studies:

Your answerChange we applyWhy
Smoke now−9 yearsPeople who keep smoking lose about 10 years compared with never-smokers (Jha et al., 2013).
Quit at 45 or later−3 yearsQuitting at 45–54 wins back about 6 of those years.
Quit before 450Quitting at 35–44 wins back about 9 years.
Never smoked+1 yearSlightly above the national mix.
Almost no exercise−1.5 yearsAbout 150 minutes a week of brisk activity is linked to 3.4 more years than none (Moore et al., 2012).
150+ minutes a week+1.5 years
300+ minutes a week+2.2 years
Obese (BMI 30–34.9)−2.5 yearsBMI 30–35 cuts median survival by 2–4 years; very high BMI by much more (Prospective Studies Collaboration, 2009).
Very obese (BMI 35+)−6 years

We cap the total change at 12 years either way, and we shrink it for older people, because there are fewer years left for a habit to add or take away.

Why life expectancy differs between countries

Big gaps between countries mostly come from how many babies and young adults die, how common diseases like heart disease, diabetes and TB are, air quality, road safety and how easy it is to see a doctor. In India, life expectancy has risen by more than 20 years since 1970, but it is still lower than in the US or UK. Averages also hide big gaps inside countries — between states, between cities and villages, and between rich and poor families.

Use your number to live better, not to worry

A 35-year-old in the US or India with an average life ahead has somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 weekends left. That sounds like a lot, until you count how many you spend on chores and scrolling. A few ideas that can help:

  • Book the trip. Pick one place from your “some day” list and give it a date.
  • Call your parents or grandparents more often. Your time with them is shorter than your own.
  • Take one healthy step this week — a 30-minute walk, a doctor’s check-up, or a plan to quit smoking.
  • Sort the paperwork. A simple will, a nominee on your bank and insurance accounts, and passwords your family can find.

Limits of this estimate

  • It uses period life tables: death rates as they were in 2023. If health keeps improving, most people will live a little longer than shown.
  • It knows nothing about your family history, illnesses, job, income or where in the country you live.
  • The habit changes are rough averages from studies. Habits overlap, so they do not simply add up.
  • It is not medical, insurance or financial advice. For personal health questions, talk to a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Can a calculator tell me when I will die?

No. Nobody can. This tool shows the average remaining lifetime for people of your age, sex and country, based on UN death-rate data. Your own life can be much longer or shorter than the average.

How is the estimate worked out?

We look up your remaining life expectancy in a period life table for your country and sex, add or subtract a few years for smoking, activity and weight (population-level study averages), and add that time to today’s date to show a population-average date.

What does life expectancy mean?

Life expectancy at a given age is the average number of extra years people of that age would live if today’s death rates stayed the same for the rest of their lives.

Why does my expected age at death go up as I get older?

Because you have already lived through the years in which some people die young. A 70-year-old can expect to reach an older age than a newborn in the same country.

Which country has the highest life expectancy in this tool?

Among the 20 countries in this tool, women in Singapore and France have the highest life expectancy at birth (about 86 years in 2023), and men in Australia and the UAE the highest for men (about 82 years).

How much does smoking shorten life?

A large US study (Jha et al., 2013) found that people who kept smoking lost about 10 years on average compared with people who never smoked, and that quitting before about age 40–45 won back most of those years. These are population averages, not a figure for any one person.

Does exercise really add years?

Yes. A study of over 650,000 adults found that 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or similar activity was linked to about 3.4 more years of life than no activity.

Is this calculator accurate for India?

It uses UN estimates for India for 2023, which combine India’s Sample Registration System data and other sources. It is an average for all of India; life expectancy differs between states, towns and villages.

Is my information stored?

No. All numbers are worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our server.
