How the birthday countdown works

The countdown compares two calendar dates: the “as of” date (today, unless you change it) and the next date your birthday falls on. The difference is the number of days to go. Because it is a date difference rather than a clock, it doesn’t tick down during the day and isn’t affected by daylight-saving changes; it moves by one at midnight on your device.

  • Days until birthday — “1” means tomorrow. On the birthday itself the calculator shows “today” and starts counting to the next one.
  • Weeks + days — the same span in completed weeks and leftover days, handy for planning a party or a gift.
  • Turning — the age reached on that birthday.
  • Weekday — the day of the week the birthday lands on. It moves forward one weekday a year, or two after a 29 February.

The table under the ring lists your previous birthday, this year’s and next year’s, with the age turned and how far each is from the as-of date.

Example

For a birthday of 24 September 2000, viewed on 26 September 2026, the birthday was two days ago. The next one is Friday, 24 September 2027 — 363 days away, or 51 weeks and 6 days — when the person turns 27. Birthdays after that fall on a Sunday in 2028 (a leap year pushes it on two days), then Monday 2029 and Tuesday 2030.

Birthdays on 29 February

If you were born on 29 February, your birthday appears on that date in leap years. In other years the calculator shows it on 28 February by default; switch the rule to “Next day (Mar 1)” if you mark it on 1 March. A note in the results explains which day is being used, and your date of birth itself is never altered. Some laws specify one day for legal purposes — Scotland’s Age of Legal Capacity Act 1991, for example, uses 1 March — but that is a legal-age rule, not a rule about when you celebrate.

Planning further ahead

To count down to a milestone birthday such as 30, 50 or 100, use the Age Milestone Calculator. For your exact age in years, months and days plus total days lived, go to the Date of Birth Calculator. Nothing you enter here is sent anywhere or saved unless you tick “Remember on this device”.

How to use the birthday countdown

  1. Enter the date of birth. The year is needed only for the "turning" age; the countdown itself uses the day and month.
  2. Keep the "as of" date as today, or change it — for example to the day you plan to send invitations.
  3. If the birthday is 29 February, choose whether you celebrate on 28 February or 1 March in common years.
  4. Read the days to go, the weeks-and-days version, the weekday and the age reached. Copy or share the result if you are organising something with others.

Two more worked examples

A birthday later this year. Born 14 November 1999, viewed on Sunday, 27 September 2026. The next birthday is Saturday, 14 November 2026, which is 48 days away — 6 weeks and 6 days — when the person turns 27. A Saturday birthday is easy to celebrate on the day itself.

A birthday next year. Born 5 March 2008, viewed on the same date. This year's birthday has passed, so the countdown runs to Friday, 5 March 2027: 159 days, or 22 weeks and 5 days, when they turn 19.

To check a countdown by hand, count the days left in the current month, add the full months in between, then add the day of the birthday. For the first example: 3 days left in September (28, 29, 30) + 31 in October + 14 in November = 48.

A simple planning timeline

Days to goGood time to…
90+Book travel or a venue for a big or milestone birthday
30–60Send invitations; order personalised gifts that need printing or engraving
14–21Confirm numbers; order a cake; post gifts that are going abroad
3–7Buy last-minute gifts; plan the day's schedule
0Celebrate — the countdown starts again for next year

Common mistakes

  • Counting the birthday itself. "1 day to go" means tomorrow; the day of the birthday shows as "today".
  • Forgetting the time difference. Friends abroad reach the birthday hours earlier or later; send messages by their local time.
  • Assuming the same weekday as last year. It moves forward by one day each year (two after a leap day).
  • Swapping day and month. 05/03 is 5 March in India and the UK but 3 May in the US.

Summary

The countdown is the number of calendar days from the as-of date to the next date your birthday falls on, shown in days and in weeks plus days, with the weekday and the age reached. It changes at midnight on your device, handles 29 February with the rule you choose, and never sends your date of birth anywhere. Start planning big birthdays about three months ahead, and send messages to friends abroad by their local time.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until my birthday?

Enter your date of birth and the countdown shows the calendar days from today to your next birthday. On the birthday itself the tool says so and counts to the following year.

What age will I turn on my next birthday?

The “Turning” figure is the number of years between your birth year and the year of your next birthday.

Does the countdown include today?

No. “1 day” means the birthday is tomorrow. The count is the difference between the two calendar dates, so it does not change with the time of day.

When is my birthday if I was born on 29 February?

In leap years it is 29 February. In other years the tool shows 28 February by default, and you can switch it to 1 March. Your date of birth itself never changes.

Can I count down to someone else’s birthday?

Yes — enter their date of birth, or just their birthday with any birth year if you only need the days remaining (the “turning” age will then not be meaningful).
