How the tax is calculated (published FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) rules)

  1. Standard deduction: ₹75,000 (new regime) or ₹50,000 (old regime) comes off the gross salary.
  2. Other deductions (old regime only): 80C, 80D, HRA exemption and the like.
  3. Slab tax on what remains — the taxable income.
  4. Section 87A rebate: up to ₹60,000 when taxable income is ≤ ₹12,00,000 (new), or up to ₹12,500 when ≤ ₹5,00,000 (old). Just above ₹12,00,000 the new regime’s marginal relief limits the tax to the income above that line.
  5. Surcharge above ₹50 lakh (with marginal relief), then 4% health and education cess on the tax plus surcharge.

New regime slabs (FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27))

₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,0005%
₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,00010%

₹20,00,000 – ₹24,00,00025%
Above ₹24,00,00030%

The same slabs apply at every age under the new regime. Under the old regime the tax-free limit is ₹2,50,000 below 60, ₹3,00,000 from 60 to 79 and ₹5,00,000 from 80, followed by 5%, 20% and 30% bands.

Examples

₹13,00,000 salary, new regime. Taxable income is ₹12,25,000. Slab tax is ₹63,750, but marginal relief caps it at ₹25,000 (the amount above ₹12 lakh). With 4% cess the tax is ₹26,000.

₹10,00,000 salary, old regime, ₹1,50,000 of deductions. Taxable income is ₹8,00,000; tax is ₹12,500 + 20% of ₹3,00,000 = ₹72,500, plus cess = ₹75,400. The new regime on the same salary is ₹0 — taxable ₹9,25,000 is under the rebate limit.

What it does not cover

Resident individual with salary income only. Capital gains and other incomes taxed at special rates, HUFs, firms and non-residents are not covered. HRA, LTA and perquisite rules are not modelled — put the exempt amount into the deductions box. Monthly take-home here is salary minus income tax only; your payslip also deducts provident fund, professional tax and other items.

Using it for another tax year

Indian income tax rules are set by each year's Finance Act, so slabs, the rebate limit and the standard deduction can change every February. This page does not claim the values above are the rules for every year. Open Tax rules above the Calculate button, type in the figures for your year, and every result and step on the page follows them. The engine itself — slabs, rebate with marginal relief, surcharge with marginal relief, cess — stays the same.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax do I pay on a ₹12 lakh salary?

Under the FY 2025-26 new-regime rules, nothing: ₹12,00,000 minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction leaves ₹11,25,000 of taxable income, and the section 87A rebate cancels tax on taxable income up to ₹12,00,000. A salary up to ₹12,75,000 pays no tax under those rules. If a later budget changes the limits, edit them under "Tax rules" and the answer follows.

Which is better, the new or the old tax regime?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower rates and a ₹75,000 standard deduction but allows almost no other deductions; the old regime has higher rates but lets you subtract 80C, 80D, HRA exemption and others. Enter your deductions and the calculator compares both and shows the difference.

What is the standard deduction for salaried employees?

₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime, or the salary itself if it is smaller. It is deducted automatically; you do not need any proof.

What is marginal relief at ₹12 lakh?

Under the new regime, if your taxable income is a little above ₹12,00,000, your tax cannot be more than the amount by which you exceed ₹12,00,000. For example, ₹12,25,000 of taxable income gives slab tax of ₹63,750, but you pay only ₹25,000 plus cess.

Is cess included?

Yes. Health and education cess of 4% is added to the income tax plus any surcharge, and the totals shown include it.

When does surcharge apply?

Above ₹50 lakh of taxable income: 10% up to ₹1 crore, 15% up to ₹2 crore and 25% above that. The old regime goes up to 37% above ₹5 crore; the new regime stops at 25%. Marginal relief is applied just above each threshold, and the calculator does that too.

Can I use it for a different tax year?

Yes. The calculator starts with the published FY 2025-26 rules, and every slab, deduction, rebate limit, surcharge rate and the cess can be changed under "Tax rules". Enter the figures for your year from the Income Tax Department and the result uses them. "Reset to FY 2025-26" puts the published values back.

Does it work for other countries?

Only India's structure — two regimes, standard deduction, a rebate, surcharge and cess — is built in. Another country's tax usually works differently, so using this page for it would give a wrong answer.

Is this my exact tax?

It is the tax on salary income from the figures you enter, using the rules shown under "Tax rules" (the published FY 2025-26 rules unless you change them). Your final tax can differ if you have other income, special-rate income such as capital gains, or deductions you did not enter. File your return on the Income Tax Department portal for the official computation.
