How to use the profit and loss calculator
- Choose Profit or loss, or Selling price.
- Enter the cost price and the selling price (or the profit %).
- Press Calculate to see the amount, the percentage and the working.
Find out whether a sale made a profit or a loss and by what percentage of the cost, or work out what to sell at for a given profit.
Enter the prices, then press Calculate.
Profit % = (selling price − cost price) ÷ cost price × 100. ₹200 profit on a ₹800 cost is 25%.
Loss % = (cost price − selling price) ÷ cost price × 100. Bought at ₹1,000 and sold at ₹900 is a 10% loss.
Selling price = cost price × (1 + profit % ÷ 100). For a 25% profit on ₹800: ₹800 × 1.25 = ₹1,000.
No. Profit % (markup) is on the cost price; margin is on the selling price. ₹200 profit on a ₹1,000 sale is a 25% markup but a 20% margin.
Profit % here is measured on the cost price, the usual school and trade convention. A margin measured on the selling price is a different number.
