GST formulas

Adding GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, total = amount + GST.

Removing GST: price before GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), GST = total − price before GST.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 18% GST to a price?

Multiply the price by 1.18. ₹1,000 × 1.18 = ₹1,180, so the GST is ₹180.

How do I remove GST from a price that includes it?

Divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100). ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so ₹180 of the ₹1,180 was GST. Taking 18% off ₹1,180 would be wrong — it gives ₹967.60.

What are CGST, SGST and IGST?

On a sale within one state the GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST): 18% is 9% + 9%. On a sale between states the whole amount is IGST.

What are the GST rates?

Since 22 September 2025 most items are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods. Some items are exempt or at special rates. Enter any rate in the box.
