The Mifflin-St Jeor equation

Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5.

Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161.

Daily need = BMR × activity factor: 1.2 sedentary, 1.375 light, 1.55 moderate, 1.725 active, 1.9 very active.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories do I need a day?

Multiply your BMR by an activity factor. The calculator does both and shows the BMR equation it used, so you can check the numbers.

How many calories to lose weight?

Eating about 500 kcal a day less than you burn loses roughly 0.5 kg (1 lb) a week; about 1,000 kcal less is roughly 1 kg (2 lb). The result shows both.

What is BMR?

Basal metabolic rate: the energy your body uses at complete rest. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990) is the one most dietitians use for adults.

Why does my result differ from my fitness tracker?

Trackers estimate activity from movement and heart rate; this calculator uses a single activity factor. Both are estimates. Track your weight for two or three weeks and adjust.
