What is a D9 (Navamsa) chart?
Your main birth chart is the D1 or Rashi chart. It shows the sidereal sign of each Graha (planet) at birth. The D9, or Navamsa (“ninth part”, Navmansh kundli in Hindi), splits every sign into nine equal parts and builds a second chart from them. Tradition reads it alongside the D1, never instead of it.
How do I use this D9 chart calculator?
- Enter your date of birth.
- Enter your time of birth in 24-hour or 12-hour (AM/PM) format, ideally from your birth certificate or hospital record.
- Start typing your birthplace and pick your city. Indian cities fill in latitude, longitude and IST (UTC+05:30); for a village, tick manual coordinates under Advanced.
- Keep the Lahiri ayanamsha (the default) or choose KP or Raman under Advanced.
- Press “Calculate D9 chart”. Switch between D1 + D9, D9 only or D1 only, and between North and South Indian style.
- Read the Navamsa Lagna, the placement table and the Vargottama list, then copy, share on WhatsApp, download the chart as PNG or save it as PDF.
EasyCalculatorSmart’s D9 Chart Calculator uses sidereal positions with the Lahiri ayanamsha by default and the classical Navamsa rule described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Everything runs in your browser.
How is the Navamsa calculated?
A sign is 30°. Divided by nine, each part is 3°20′, so the zodiac holds 108 Navamsas, the same as the 108 nakshatra padas. Where the counting starts depends on the type of sign:
| Sign type | Signs | 1st Navamsa starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Movable (chara) | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | the same sign |
| Fixed (sthira) | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | the 9th sign from it |
| Dual (dvisvabhava) | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | the 5th sign from it |
This is the same as saying fire signs start from Aries, earth signs from Capricorn, air signs from Libra and water signs from Cancer. Count forward one sign for every 3°20′.
Worked example: a planet at 16°40′ Leo
- Leo is fixed, so the count starts from the 9th sign from Leo: Aries.
- 16°40′ ÷ 3°20′ = exactly 5. Five parts are complete, so the planet is at the start of the 6th part (16°40′–20°).
- Six signs from Aries: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo. The Navamsa is Virgo (Kanya).
- At 16°39′59″, one arcsecond earlier, it would still be in the 5th part, which is Leo itself, and so Vargottama. Small differences matter.
A part includes its starting degree: exactly 3°20′ Aries is already the 2nd Navamsa (Taurus).
D1 vs D9: what is the difference?
| D1 (Rashi chart) | D9 (Navamsa chart) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | The actual sidereal sign of each planet | The sign of the 3°20′ part each planet is in |
| Lagna changes about every | 2 hours on average (one sign) | 10–20 minutes (one Navamsa) |
| Traditionally read for | The whole life and the basic promise of the chart | Marriage, dharma and the strength of planets |
| Used on its own? | Yes, it is the main chart | No, always read with the D1 |
What are Navamsa Lagna and Vargottama?
The Navamsa Lagna (D9 Ascendant) is the Navamsa sign of your birth Ascendant degree. It becomes the 1st Bhava (house) of the D9, and it is shown at the top of your result.
A planet is Vargottama when its D1 and D9 signs are the same. That happens only in the 1st part of a movable sign, the 5th part of a fixed sign and the 9th part of a dual sign. Tradition reads it as strength, and your result lists every Vargottama placement.
How to read a D9 chart for marriage?
In Vedic astrology tradition, a D9 reading for marriage looks at four things. The calculator lists each for your chart under “What tradition reads from this chart”.
- The 7th house of the D9, counted from the Navamsa Lagna.
- The 7th lord, the planet ruling that sign, and where it sits.
- Venus (Shukra), the traditional significator of relationships.
- Jupiter (Guru), read for wisdom and, in older texts, the husband in a woman’s chart.
These are general descriptions, not predictions. No chart can say when or whom you will marry.
North Indian vs South Indian chart style
North Indian (diamond): the houses stay fixed and the signs move. The top-centre diamond is always the 1st house. The number in each house is the sign, from 1 = Aries (Mesha) to 12 = Pisces (Meena), and the houses run anticlockwise.
South Indian (grid): the signs stay fixed and the houses move. Pisces is top-left, Aries next to it, running clockwise. The shaded box with a diagonal line is the Lagna. Both styles show the same chart; use the one your family is used to.
Common mistakes and tips
- AM/PM swapped. 12:30 AM is just after midnight. If unsure, use 24-hour time (00:30).
- Wrong date after midnight. A birth at 00:15 on 5 March is entered as 5 March.
- Wrong place or time zone. Enter your birthplace and local clock time; the calculator converts it.
- Tropical vs sidereal. Western sites use the tropical zodiac, about 24° ahead today, so their signs often differ.
- Different settings. Another ayanamsha or the true node can change placements near a boundary.
Use the time on your birth certificate. If you only know it roughly, choose “Approximate”; anything that would change within ±5 minutes is marked †.
Which ayanamsha is used?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac, which is tied to the stars. The gap between it and the tropical zodiac is the ayanamsha. The default here is Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), adopted by India’s Calendar Reform Committee; it was about 24°13′ in 2026. Under Advanced you can choose KP (about 6′ less) or B.V. Raman (about 1°27′ less).
Checked against NASA JPL Horizons for five Indian births, no D1 or D9 sign differed.
Is my birth data saved?
No. The chart is calculated in your browser. Your birth details are not sent to our server, stored or logged, and copying or sharing leaves them out unless you tick the box.

Frequently asked questions
Navamsa chart kya hai?
A Navamsa chart (D9 kundli) is made by dividing every Rashi of your birth chart into nine parts of 3°20′ and placing each planet in the sign that rules its part. This calculator draws it from your birth date, time and place and shows your Navamsa Lagna, Vargottama planets and D1 vs D9 side by side.
D9 chart kaise dekhe?
Start with the Navamsa Lagna, the sign in the first house of the D9. Then see which sign each planet is in and which planets are Vargottama (same sign in D1 and D9). Then look at the 7th house of the D9, its lord, Venus and Jupiter; the calculator lists these for you.
D9 chart se shaadi ke baare mein kya pata chalta hai?
In Vedic astrology tradition the D9 is the chart most often consulted about marriage: the 7th house of the D9, its lord, Venus and Jupiter are read for the nature of partnership. It is a traditional belief, not a prediction, and should not decide a marriage.
Is the D9 chart only for marriage?
No. Marriage is its best-known use, but tradition also reads the Navamsa for dharma (life direction), for the real strength of each planet, and as the “fruit” of the birth chart in later life.
Can the D9 change if my birth time is wrong by 5 minutes?
Yes, if the Ascendant is near a 3°20′ boundary. The Navamsa Lagna moves to a new sign roughly every 10–20 minutes, so a few minutes can change it, but only near an edge. The calculator re-checks your chart 5 minutes either side and marks any placement that would change with †.
Which ayanamsha does this calculator use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) by default, the Indian standard. Under Advanced you can switch to KP (Krishnamurti) or B.V. Raman; the chart recalculates and keeps your inputs. Lahiri is the one we have verified in full.
D9 vs D1: which is more important?
The D1 (Rashi) chart is the main birth chart and comes first. The D9 is derived from it and is read together with it, never instead of it. It is used to confirm or qualify what the D1 shows.
Is this chart accurate for people born outside India?
Yes. The calculator applies your birthplace’s own time-zone rules for that date, including daylight saving time abroad, so a birth in London, New York or Dubai is converted correctly. Births above 66° latitude are refused because the Ascendant becomes unstable there.
