How to rotate an animated GIF
- Drop your GIF file on the box above, or click it to choose the file — or press Load a sample to try it first.
- Check the settings below the box; the defaults suit most files.
- Press Convert. Long jobs show a progress bar and can be cancelled; you then see what was made and its real size.
- Download the .gif file.
What is kept when you rotate an animated GIF
- Turn every frame 90°, 180° or 270° clockwise, or flip it horizontally or vertically.
- Pixels are moved, not resampled, so nothing is blurred; frame delays and looping are kept exactly.
- Frames are re-encoded with their own palettes; when a frame has 256 colours or fewer, its colours are kept exactly.
Example
Turning the sample a quarter turn:
Input
sample.gif — 16 frames, 160 × 120 px, 1.28 s, loops forever (11.0 KB)
Rotate 90° clockwise Output
16 frames, 120 × 160 px, 1.28 s, loops forever (14.9 KB)
About GIF files
A GIF holds one or more frames, each with up to 256 colours, a display time in hundredths of a second, and a rule for what happens to it when the next frame appears. It plays everywhere, which is why it survives. It opens in every browser, chat app and image viewer.
Good to know
- Browsers play frame delays of 0 or 10 ms as 100 ms, so 20 ms (50 frames per second) is the fastest a GIF really plays.
Privacy and limits
The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Frame count, size and memory are checked from the file’s structure before any frame is decoded, so a hostile GIF cannot exhaust the tab. A GIF may have up to 500 frames and 2,048 pixels on each side. Files up to 50 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.
