How to extract the frames of a GIF as PNG
- Drop your GIF file on the box above, or click it to choose the file — or press Load a sample to try it first.
- Check the settings below the box; the defaults suit most files.
- Press Convert. Long jobs show a progress bar and can be cancelled; you then see what was made and its real size.
- Download the .png file.
What is kept when you extract the frames of a GIF as PNG
- Every frame (or the one you choose) is saved as a full PNG exactly as the browser shows it at that moment — partial-update frames are completed first.
- PNG is lossless, so every pixel and its transparency is kept; nothing is re-quantised.
- Several frames download as a ZIP (frame-001.png…); the frame delays are listed in the summary.
Example
The ZIP made from the sample GIF:
Input
sample.gif — 16 frames, 160 × 120 px, 1.28 s, loops forever (11.0 KB) Output
sample-frame-001.png 80 ms
sample-frame-002.png 80 ms
sample-frame-003.png 80 ms
sample-frame-004.png 80 ms
…
sample-frame-016.png 80 ms
(each 160 × 120 px, complete frame)
About GIF and PNG files
A GIF holds one or more frames, each with up to 256 colours, a display time in hundredths of a second, and a rule for what happens to it when the next frame appears. It plays everywhere, which is why it survives. It opens in every browser, chat app and image viewer.
PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so a GIF frame saved as PNG is pixel-for-pixel what the browser shows. It opens in every browser, editor and image viewer.
Good to know
- Browsers play frame delays of 0 or 10 ms as 100 ms, so 20 ms (50 frames per second) is the fastest a GIF really plays.
- Frames saved as PNG are a good starting point for editing; re-assemble them with the GIF Maker afterwards.
Privacy and limits
The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Frame count, size and memory are checked from the file’s structure before any frame is decoded, so a hostile GIF cannot exhaust the tab. A GIF may have up to 500 frames and 2,048 pixels on each side. Files up to 50 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.
