How to add a text watermark to a PDF

  2. Check the settings below the box; the defaults suit most files.
  3. Press Convert. Long jobs show a progress bar and can be cancelled; you then see what was made and its real size.
  4. Download the .pdf file.

What is kept when you add a text watermark to a PDF

  • Your text is drawn as vector text in the centre of each page, diagonally or straight, at the opacity and colour you choose; it scales with each page’s size and follows each page’s orientation.
  • The original page content is untouched underneath, so text stays selectable. The watermark is part of the page and cannot be switched off like a comment.
  • Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese text is supported (embedded Noto Sans); Arabic, Hindi and other scripts that need shaping are refused with an explanation.

Example

Watermarking the sample — the watermark is real text, so it shows up in the page text:

Input

sample.pdf — 3 pages, A4 portrait (440.0 KB)
Text: CONFIDENTIAL, diagonal, 25% grey

Output

3 pages (492.0 KB); the text layer of page 1 now includes:
CONFIDENTIAL
…as well as every original line of the page.

About PDF files

A PDF holds pages that look the same on every device: text with its fonts, vector drawings and images at fixed positions. Pages can be rotated, reordered or copied between files without redrawing them. It opens in any browser, Acrobat Reader, phone and tablet viewers.

Good to know

  • A PDF that asks for a password when you open it cannot be processed here; protection is never removed.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Nothing inside a PDF is run: there is no PDF JavaScript engine on this page, and links and forms are copied, not followed. Encrypted PDFs are refused rather than unlocked. PDFs may have up to 2,000 pages. Files up to 150 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Can a watermark be removed?

Anyone with a PDF editor can delete objects from a page, so a visible watermark marks a document but does not secure it.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Yes — list the pages, for example 1, 3-5; leave the field empty for every page.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint. The PDF libraries (about 2 MB) are downloaded from this site the first time you open a PDF, then cached.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 150 MB at a time. PDFs may have up to 2,000 pages. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
