What changes when you convert AVIF to PBM

  • Every pixel becomes pure black or pure white depending on the threshold — detail in mid-tones is lost by design.
  • PBM cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white — what image editors do when saving to PBM.
  • An animated AVIF becomes a single still image (the first frame).
  • Camera details and GPS location (EXIF) are not copied into the new file. Photo orientation is applied to the pixels first, so the result is the right way up.

About AVIF and PBM files

AVIF is a newer web format built on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP, but many editors, phones’ gallery apps and upload forms still cannot open it.

PBM stores pure black and white — one bit per pixel. Each pixel becomes black or white depending on whether its brightness is below a threshold you choose. It is a good choice for plotters, cutters, fax-style images and simple bitmap processing.

Limits

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch and images up to 50 megapixels — beyond that browsers run out of memory, so the tool says so instead of producing a broken file. Reading AVIF needs a current browser (Chrome or Edge 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+); an older one reports the file as unreadable. Files that are not images, or are damaged, are rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline.

Is AVIF to PBM lossless?

Not for photos: PBM keeps only black and white.

How is black or white decided?

Each pixel’s brightness is compared with the threshold (128 by default). Darker pixels become black, lighter ones white. Move the slider to keep more or less dark detail.

What happens to transparency?

It is filled with white, because PBM cannot store transparency.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch, and images up to 50 megapixels. Convert them together and download each one, or take them all as a ZIP.
