What changes when you convert AVIF to PSD

  • Every decoded pixel is written exactly — PSD is lossless here. Converting cannot restore detail AVIF compression already discarded; it only stops further loss.
  • Transparency is kept.
  • An animated AVIF becomes a single still image (the first frame).
  • Camera details and GPS location (EXIF) are not copied into the new file. Photo orientation is applied to the pixels first, so the result is the right way up.
  • Expect a much larger file: PSD here is uncompressed, about width × height × 4 bytes — roughly 48 MB for a 12-megapixel photo.

About AVIF and PSD files

AVIF is a newer web format built on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even better than WebP, but many editors, phones’ gallery apps and upload forms still cannot open it.

PSD is Photoshop’s own format. The file written here is a single flattened image (no layers can be created from a flat picture); transparency, if any, becomes the image’s alpha channel. Photoshop, GIMP and Photopea open it. It is a good choice for starting an edit in Photoshop or a tool that asks for a .psd.

Limits

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch and images up to 50 megapixels — beyond that browsers run out of memory, so the tool says so instead of producing a broken file. Reading AVIF needs a current browser (Chrome or Edge 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+); an older one reports the file as unreadable. Files that are not images, or are damaged, are rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline.

Is AVIF to PSD lossless?

Yes, for the pixels: PSD stores every decoded pixel exactly. It cannot restore detail already lost in the AVIF file.

Will the PSD have layers?

No. A flat picture has nothing to split into layers, so the PSD contains one image. If the source had transparency, it is stored as an alpha channel you can load as a selection.

What happens to transparency?

It is kept.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch, and images up to 50 megapixels. Convert them together and download each one, or take them all as a ZIP.
