What changes when you convert HEIC to PNG

  • Every decoded pixel is written exactly — PNG is lossless here. Converting cannot restore detail HEIC compression already discarded; it only stops further loss.
  • Transparency is kept.
  • Camera details and GPS location (EXIF) are not copied into the new file. Photo orientation is applied to the pixels first, so the result is the right way up.

About HEIC and PNG files

HEIC is the format iPhones save photos in by default. It is roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG, but Windows, Android and most websites cannot open it without extra software.

PNG is lossless: every pixel is stored exactly, and it supports full transparency. Photos come out large; screenshots, logos and graphics with flat colour stay small. It is a good choice for screenshots, logos, graphics with text, and anything that needs a transparent background.

Limits

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch and images up to 50 megapixels — beyond that browsers run out of memory, so the tool says so instead of producing a broken file. HEIC decoding uses libheif in the background and can take a few seconds per photo on a phone. Files that are not images, or are damaged, are rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device (the HEIC decoder, about 2 MB, is downloaded from this site the first time you convert), and this page has no upload endpoint. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline.

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?

Yes, for the pixels: PNG stores every decoded pixel exactly. It cannot restore detail already lost in the HEIC file.

Why is the PNG bigger than the original?

PNG is lossless. A photo that was stored lossily keeps all its pixels as PNG, which takes more space; screenshots and graphics with flat colour usually stay small.

What happens to transparency?

It is kept.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 30 files of 25 MB each per batch, and images up to 50 megapixels. Convert them together and download each one, or take them all as a ZIP.
