Gold Rate in India Today
The international gold price, converted to rupees, for every purity India buys — with the source named, the time stamped, and an honest account of the gap between this number and what a jeweller will charge you. The calculator below works from whichever price you trust.
No current reference rate to show.
Rather than print a figure that might be days old without saying so, this page shows nothing here. The calculator takes a price you enter and is unaffected.

Gold value calculator
Weight, purity and a price in, an itemised value out. Every optional charge is listed on its own line and none of them is applied unless you enter it.
Enter the rate for the purity you select below. A jeweller quoting "₹14,185 per gram" almost always means per gram of 22K as weighed, not per gram of pure gold — this calculator asks which, and will not guess.
What you have to spend, including every charge you enter below. The answer is the weight that adds up to exactly this figure — not the weight before charges are added to it.
Advanced — making charge, wastage, GST, buy-back
All four start empty and stay out of the total until you enter them. There is no universal Indian making charge and no single jewellery tax rule this calculator could apply on your behalf, so it applies none and shows each one you enter on its own line.
A percentage of the value of the gold actually billed, which is how most Indian shops quote it. Whatever you are quoted — nothing is assumed.
Added as extra gold weight billed, which is how wastage is normally charged — not as a percentage of the money.
Whatever appears on your bill, entered by you. This calculator does not assume a rate, because what is charged depends on what is being sold and this page is not tax advice. If your invoice shows 3%, use the chip or type 3.
What a buyer takes off melt value when you sell. Shown as a separate "if you sold it today" figure, never folded into the purchase total.
Enter a weight and a rate to see the value, the pure gold content, and every charge on its own line.
Every purity, from 24K to 14K
Indian gold searches split across five purities, and they are not evenly spread. Across the keyword research behind this build, 22 carat and 916 together carry about 1.08 million searches a month, 24 carat about 528,000, 18 carat about 394,000, 20 carat about 150,000 and 14 carat about 51,000. All five are converted below from the same reference figure.
Karat, fineness and what is actually stamped
Karat is a fraction of 24 by mass. It is not a quality grade and it has nothing to do with the carat that weighs gemstones — a 22-carat ring and a 2-carat diamond use the same word for two unrelated things.
- 24K 24/24 = 100.0000% gold stamped 999 Pure gold. Coins, bars and bank-sold gold. Too soft for most jewellery.
- 22K 22/24 = 91.6667% gold stamped 916 The default for Indian gold jewellery. Stamped 916.
- 20K 20/24 = 83.3333% gold stamped 833 Less common, but searched for in several northern and central cities.
- 18K 18/24 = 75.0000% gold stamped 750 Stone-set and lighter designs. Stamped 750.
- 14K 14/24 = 58.3333% gold stamped 585 Stamped 585 in India and Europe. The hallmark is the legal minimum, not the karat arithmetic.
Where the stamp and the arithmetic disagree — 14K is 583.33 by the karat fraction but stamped 585 — the stamp is a legal minimum fineness, not a rounding error. This platform keeps the two numbers apart and never swaps one for the other.
Grams, tola, pavan and bhori
India does not buy gold in one unit. The gram and the ten-gram are national, but the traditional unit changes with the region and the three main ones are not interchangeable: a pavan is 8 g, a tola is 11.6638038 g, and a bhori is the tola under the eastern name. Kerala and Tamil Nadu quote in pavan — "1 pavan gold rate today" alone carries about 12,000 searches a month, and "today gold rate kerala 1 pavan 916" another 80,000. The north quotes in tola. Bengal, Odisha and Assam quote in bhori.
Indian gold weights, exactly
| Unit | In grams | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| gram | 1 g | Used across India |
| 10 grams | 10 g | Used across India |
| kilogram | 1000 g | Used across India |
| troy ounce | 31.1034768 g | Used across India |
| tola | 11.6638038 g | North India |
| pavan | 8 g | Kerala and Tamil Nadu |
| bhori (vori) | 11.6638038 g | West Bengal, Odisha and Assam |
The pavan and the tola are different weights, not regional names for the same one: a pavan is 8 g and a tola is 11.6638038 g, so a pavan is about 69% of a tola. The bhori — vori in some places — is the tola under a different name, exactly, with no rounding between them.
Recent readings
One stored reading per day, charted from this platform's own records. It does not import a history it did not observe, so the chart starts the day the platform did and fills in from there.
Not enough stored history to draw a chart yet.
This platform charts readings it has recorded itself, one per day. It has none so far, so there is nothing to plot. It will fill in as the scheduled update runs — and until it does, an empty chart is a more honest thing to show than a borrowed one.
By state and city
Every page below carries the same reference rate — there is no per-city figure here, because there is no free feed of one. What changes is the local unit, the purity that area's own searches ask for, and the context. Those are real differences, and they are the only differences claimed.
Common questions
What is the gold rate in India today?
This page shows the international spot price converted to rupees, updated hourly from a named feed with the timestamp beside it. That figure is the metal value underneath an Indian price — it is not what a jeweller charges. An Indian counter price adds import duty, GST, making charge and the shop's margin, which together put it materially above the number here. For an exact figure, take the per-gram rate your jeweller or local association quotes and put it into the calculator on this page.
What is 916 gold, and is it the same as 22 carat?
Yes. 916 is the hallmark stamped on 22 carat gold, and it comes straight from the karat arithmetic: 22 divided by 24 is 0.91666…, which is 916.67 parts per thousand, rounded down to 916 for the stamp. So 916, 22K and 22 carat all describe the same alloy — 91.67% gold by mass, the rest copper and silver to make it hard enough to wear. It is what most Indian jewellery is made of.
How many grams is one tola of gold?
11.6638038 grams, exactly. The tola of India and Pakistan is defined as three eighths of a troy ounce, and a troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 g. It is not 11.66 g rounded — on a kilogram of gold that rounding would lose about a third of a gram. The bhori, or vori, used in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam is the same weight under a different name.
What is a pavan, and how is it different from a tola?
A pavan is 8 grams and a tola is 11.6638038 grams, so they are genuinely different weights — a pavan is about 69% of a tola. The pavan, also called a sovereign or savaran, is the unit Kerala and Tamil Nadu buy jewellery in; the tola is the northern unit. Mixing them up overstates or understates a purchase by nearly a third, which is why this calculator lists both separately and converts between them exactly.
Is 20 carat gold a real hallmark grade in India?
Twenty carat is 20/24 = 83.33% gold, stamped 833, and it is a real alloy — but it is not one of the grades BIS hallmarks in India, which are 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K depending on the scheme in force. Searches for it are real and substantial, particularly in Delhi and Gwalior, so this platform supports and converts it. If a piece is being sold to you as 20 carat, ask what it is actually stamped.
Why do gold rates differ between Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi?
Because Indian city rates are set by local jewellers' associations, not by a single national exchange. Each one starts from the same international metal price and the same import duty, then adds local transport, local taxes and local demand. Southern cities have historically quoted a small premium over the north. This platform does not publish those city figures, because no free feed makes them available and estimating them would mean inventing numbers.
Does this page include GST and making charges?
Not unless you enter them. The rates shown are metal value only. The calculator has a separate line for making charge, for wastage, for any tax that appears on your bill and for a buy-back deduction, and each one stays at zero and out of the total until you type a figure into it. There is no universal Indian making charge and no single jewellery tax rule that could honestly be applied on your behalf.
How often is this page updated?
A scheduled job checks both sources at most once an hour. A reading is stored only if it passes structure, currency, range, timestamp and step-size checks, so a broken response cannot overwrite a good figure. After two hours the page stops calling a figure current and labels it a previous reading; after seventy-two it stops showing it at all and the calculator switches to your own price.
Source & methodology
Where the numbers come from
- gold-api.com
-
International spot price (XAU/USD, per troy ounce)
A spot quote for unallocated gold on the international market. It is not an Indian rate, not a retail rate, and carries no duty, GST or making charge.
- exchangerate-api.com
-
USD to INR reference exchange rate
A reference mid-rate, not the rate any bank or money changer will give you. The open endpoint updates about once a day; an authenticated key updates more often.
How the rupee figure is produced
One step, and it is arithmetic on two fetched numbers:
24K per gram (₹) = spot (USD per troy ounce) × USD/INR ÷ 31.1034768
31.1034768 g is the troy ounce, exactly, by definition — 480 grains of 64.79891 mg each. Nothing is added, rounded or adjusted in that line.
How the other purities are produced
By the karat fraction and nothing else: a karat figure is the 24K figure multiplied by karat ÷ 24. 22K is 22/24 = 91.6667% of the 24K number, 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.3333%. That is a purity conversion. It does not include a retail premium, a jeweller's margin, a making charge or any tax, and this platform never folds any of those into a rate.
A hallmark number is not the same thing as the karat arithmetic and is not substituted for it. 14K is 58.333% gold by the karat definition and is stamped 585; 22K is 91.667% and is stamped 916. Both numbers appear on the cards above, labelled separately.
What this platform does not have
A retail gold rate for India, or for any other Indian city. There is no free, redistributable feed of Indian jewellers' counter prices, and the gap between the international figure above and what a shop actually charges is large — import duty, GST, making charge and margin between them put it well into double-digit percentages. Nudging the reference number by a plausible-looking amount and calling the result a local rate would be inventing data, so this platform does not do it. It asks you for the number instead, and then does the arithmetic exactly.
It also has no per-city variation of its own. The reference figure is national — international, in fact — and the same on every page here. What differs page to page is the local unit, the purity your area actually asks for, and the context; not a manufactured local price.
Update schedule and failure behaviour
A scheduled job fetches both sources at most once an hour and stores the result only if it passes structure, type, range, timestamp and step-size checks. A reading that fails any of them is discarded and the previous good one is kept — bad data never overwrites good data.
Past 2 hours the page stops calling a figure current and labels it a previous reading. Past 72 hours it stops showing the figure at all and the calculator switches to your own price. Failures are logged server-side. At no point is a value generated, estimated or carried forward silently.
