What is kept when you convert Markdown to HTML

  • Headings, emphasis, lists, task lists, tables, block quotes, code blocks and links are converted with GitHub-flavoured Markdown rules (marked 15).
  • Raw HTML inside the Markdown is shown as text by default, and javascript: links are removed, so the output is safe to publish.
  • Choose a complete page with simple styling, or just the HTML fragment to paste into a template.

About Markdown and HTML files

Markdown is plain text with light formatting marks — # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items, backticks for code. README files, notes apps, GitHub and many documentation sites use it. It opens in any text editor, GitHub, Obsidian, Typora, VS Code.

HTML is the language of web pages. The files written here are complete pages with their styling built in, so they open directly in a browser. It opens in any browser; editable in any code editor.

Good to know

  • GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian and most wikis render Markdown directly — paste the result rather than attaching the file.
  • The HTML file needs no internet connection and no extra files, so it can be emailed or archived as is.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. HTML and javascript: links inside the Markdown are neutralised unless you choose otherwise. Files up to 25 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the HTML I wrote inside my Markdown?

Yes — tick “Keep raw HTML”. It is off by default because HTML from an unknown file can contain scripts; only keep it for your own documents.

Is code highlighted?

Code blocks keep a language-… class so a highlighter such as Prism or highlight.js on your site can colour them; the file itself adds no scripts.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 25 MB at a time. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
