What is kept when you convert IPYNB to HTML

  • Markdown cells, code cells with their In [n] numbers, and the outputs saved in the notebook — text, errors, PNG/JPEG/SVG charts — are kept in order.
  • Nothing is executed: you get the outputs from the last time the notebook was run, exactly as saved.
  • HTML outputs (for example pandas tables) are shown in sandboxed frames and the page carries a policy that blocks all scripts, so a notebook from someone else cannot run code in your browser.

Example

For a two-cell notebook (a Markdown heading, and a code cell that printed 0.25), the HTML body is:

Output

<div class="cell md"><h1>Growth</h1>
<p>Rate $g = b/a - 1$.</p>
</div>
<div class="cell code"><div class="in"><div class="prompt">In [1]:</div><pre><code class="language-python">%matplotlib inline
print(150 / 120 - 1)</code></pre></div><div class="out"><pre>0.25
</pre></div></div>

About IPYNB and HTML files

An .ipynb file is a Jupyter notebook: a JSON document holding Markdown cells, code cells and the outputs (text, tables, charts) saved the last time the cells were run. It opens in Jupyter, JupyterLab, VS Code, Google Colab.

HTML is the language of web pages. The files written here are complete pages with their styling built in, so they open directly in a browser. It opens in any browser; editable in any code editor.

Good to know

  • Outputs are only as fresh as the last run. Run all cells and save the notebook in Jupyter before converting if you need current results.
  • The HTML file needs no internet connection and no extra files, so it can be emailed or archived as is.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Notebook code is never executed — only the saved cells and outputs are converted. Files up to 25 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Will my charts appear?

Yes, if they were saved in the notebook as images (matplotlib, seaborn and most libraries do this). Interactive widgets and JavaScript charts (Plotly, Bokeh) need their scripts, which are deliberately not included.

Are formulas rendered?

LaTeX formulas in Markdown cells are kept as written ($…$) but not typeset, because that would need a script. IPYNB to LaTeX typesets them.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 25 MB at a time. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
