What is kept when you convert IPYNB to Word

  • Markdown cells keep headings, emphasis, lists and tables; code cells use a monospace Code style with their In [n] labels.
  • Saved outputs are kept: text and errors as code blocks, PNG and JPEG charts as real pictures scaled to the page.
  • Formulas are kept as their LaTeX source text (Word cannot read LaTeX maths). Nothing is executed.

About IPYNB and Word files

An .ipynb file is a Jupyter notebook: a JSON document holding Markdown cells, code cells and the outputs (text, tables, charts) saved the last time the cells were run. It opens in Jupyter, JupyterLab, VS Code, Google Colab.

A .docx is a Word document: a ZIP package of XML parts that Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages all read. It opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages.

Good to know

  • Outputs are only as fresh as the last run. Run all cells and save the notebook in Jupyter before converting if you need current results.
  • Choose Word when someone will edit the result. For a document that must look identical everywhere, PDF is better; for a web page, HTML.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Notebook code is never executed — only the saved cells and outputs are converted. Files up to 25 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Will my matplotlib charts be in the document?

Yes, if they were saved in the notebook when it was last run. Re-run and save the notebook first if a chart is missing.

Can I hide the code and keep only results?

Not yet — code cells are always included. Delete them in Word, or untick outputs to get the code only.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 25 MB at a time. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
