What is kept when you convert IPYNB to PDF

  • Markdown cells, code cells with their In [n] labels, and saved text, error and picture outputs are typeset in order with page numbers.
  • PNG and JPEG charts are placed as pictures (transparent areas become white); the fonts are embedded so code and text stay searchable.
  • Formulas appear as their LaTeX source text. Arabic, Hindi and CJK text is refused with an explanation, as the PDF writer cannot shape those scripts.

About IPYNB and PDF files

An .ipynb file is a Jupyter notebook: a JSON document holding Markdown cells, code cells and the outputs (text, tables, charts) saved the last time the cells were run. It opens in Jupyter, JupyterLab, VS Code, Google Colab.

A PDF fixes text and layout into pages that look the same on every device and printer. The PDFs written here embed their font, so the text stays selectable and searchable. It opens in any browser, Acrobat Reader, phone and tablet viewers.

Good to know

  • Outputs are only as fresh as the last run. Run all cells and save the notebook in Jupyter before converting if you need current results.
  • Choose PDF for printing, archiving and sending final versions. If the recipient needs to edit, send Word instead.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Notebook code is never executed — only the saved cells and outputs are converted. Files up to 25 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Jupyter, Python or LaTeX installed?

No. Unlike nbconvert, this needs nothing installed — the PDF is written in your browser from the notebook file.

Why are my formulas not typeset?

Typesetting LaTeX maths needs a TeX engine. Use IPYNB to LaTeX and compile on Overleaf when the formulas must look printed.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint. The PDF fonts (about 1 MB) are downloaded from this site the first time you make a PDF, then cached.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 25 MB at a time. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
