- Download the .xlsx file.
What is kept when you convert IIF to Excel
- One worksheet with a column for each IIF field, plus Transaction and Record columns that group TRNS and SPL lines.
- Amounts are numeric cells; IDs, document numbers and dates stay text exactly as written.
- Unbalanced transactions (lines not summing to zero) are counted in the summary, not altered.
About IIF and Excel files
IIF (Intuit Interchange Format) is a tab-separated text file for QuickBooks Desktop. Header lines start with ! and name the fields; TRNS and SPL lines make up a transaction and ENDTRNS closes it. It opens in QuickBooks Desktop, any spreadsheet as tab-separated text.
An .xlsx is an Excel workbook. Numbers written here are real numeric cells; identifiers with leading zeros or more than 15 digits stay text so Excel cannot round them. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Numbers.
Good to know
- IIF files are tab-separated; if a file opens with everything in one column, it was saved with commas or spaces instead and QuickBooks would reject it too.
- Excel shows at most 1,048,576 rows and 32,767 characters per cell; larger data still opens, but is cut off on screen.
Privacy and limits
The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Amounts are handled as exact decimal text, never as rounded numbers. Files up to 25 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.
