What is kept when you convert IIF to CSV

  • Every record is kept with the field names from its !HEADER line; TRNS and SPL lines share a transaction number so you can see which lines belong together.
  • Values are copied exactly — dates, amounts, account names and memos are not reinterpreted.
  • Lists (accounts, customers, vendors) in the same file are kept as rows of their own record type.

Example

A short IIF input and the exact output this tool produces from it:

!ENDTRNS
TRNS CHECK	09/20/2026	Checking	-1200.00	"Rent, September"

About IIF and CSV files

IIF (Intuit Interchange Format) is a tab-separated text file for QuickBooks Desktop. Header lines start with ! and name the fields; TRNS and SPL lines make up a transaction and ENDTRNS closes it. It opens in QuickBooks Desktop, any spreadsheet as tab-separated text.

CSV (comma-separated values) is a table as plain text: one row per line, fields separated by commas, and fields that contain commas, quotes or line breaks wrapped in double quotes. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice, any database tool.

Good to know

  • IIF files are tab-separated; if a file opens with everything in one column, it was saved with commas or spaces instead and QuickBooks would reject it too.
  • If a spreadsheet showed all your data in one column, the file probably uses semicolons (common in Europe); choose the delimiter instead of relying on detection.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Amounts are handled as exact decimal text, never as rounded numbers. Files up to 25 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

What do TRNS, SPL and ENDTRNS mean?

TRNS is the first line of a QuickBooks transaction, SPL lines are its other sides, and ENDTRNS closes it. The amounts of one transaction should add up to zero; the tool reports any that do not.

Can I import the CSV into QuickBooks Online?

QuickBooks Online imports bank transactions from CSV, but not IIF journal structures. Use the CSV to review or reshape the data first.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint. Your account numbers and transactions are never sent anywhere.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 25 MB at a time. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
