What is kept when you convert EPUB to XML

  • Metadata (title, creators, language, identifier, publisher, date, description, subjects) and every chapter in reading order.
  • Each chapter keeps its number, title, source file and word count, with headings and paragraphs as separate elements.
  • All text is escaped and invalid characters are removed, so the file always parses.

Example

The same two-chapter EPUB as XML:

Output

About EPUB and XML files

An EPUB is an e-book packaged as a ZIP file: XHTML chapters, a package file listing them in reading order, metadata such as title and author, and usually a table of contents. It opens in Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Calibre, Thorium.

XML stores data as nested, named elements. Element names must follow XML’s rules, special characters are escaped, and a few control characters are not allowed at all. It opens in code editors, Excel (as an XML table), databases, integration tools.

Good to know

  • Check the result in two readers (for example Apple Books and Calibre) — they differ slightly in fonts and spacing.
  • If the target system has its own XML schema, rename the root and record elements to match it in the settings.

Privacy and limits

The file is read and converted by this page in your browser; there is no upload and no account. Scripts inside the book are never run, the ZIP is read with size limits that stop archive bombs, and DRM-protected books are refused. Files up to 100 MB are accepted; a file of the wrong type or a damaged file is rejected with the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same XML that is inside the EPUB?

No. The EPUB holds many XHTML files plus packaging; this tool merges the text into one simple, documented XML structure — shown in the example below.

Are footnotes kept?

Footnote text is kept where it appears in the chapter, as ordinary paragraphs.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, and this page has no upload endpoint.

Is there a size limit?

One file of up to 100 MB at a time. Larger files can exhaust a browser tab’s memory, so the tool refuses them with a message instead of failing halfway.
